Many of the traditions which we think of as very ancient in their origins were not in fact sanctioned by long usage over the centuries, but were invented comparatively recently. This book explores examples of this process of invention - the creation of Welsh and Scottish 'national culture'; the elaboration of British royal rituals in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries; the origins of imperial rituals in British India and Africa; and the attempts by radical movements to develop counter-traditions of their own. It addresses the complex interaction of past and present, bringing together historians and anthropologists in a fascinating study of ritual and symbolism which poses new questions for the understanding of our history.

这本书的核心论点是:目前欧洲人所热衷的那些传统,至多只能追溯到十九世纪末。像苏格兰的格子呢、英国王室的浮夸等等,这些现象远没有传说的那么古老,它们只能追溯到维多利亚时代。更有趣的是,许多备受赞美的传统竟然是舶来品。
就算如此,这样一种对“传说”真理的发现又有什么意义?它会使我们不再珍视我们的传统吗?不会。传统当然不全是真理。许多传统的确含有谎言的成分,但是不断和重复会使它们变得珍贵与崇高。关键不在于它们曾经是谎言,而在于它们从谎言变为传说的过程。
