COUSIN BETTY By Honore De Balzac 【

COUSIN BETTY By Honore De Balzac 【

“Life cannot go on without a great deal of forgetting.”
―from COUSIN BETTE by Honoré de Balzac
A hypnotic story of hatred, revenge and catastrophe in which Cousin Bette exacts a terrible price from the rich relations who use and humiliate her. This book portrays the world of post-Napoleonic France, where commercial greed and sexual debauchery are rampant among a demoralized ruling class. Along with his wide descriptive range and the astute understanding of society for which he is celebrated, Balzac had immense psychological penetration. All these qualities are fully evident in his story of the ferocious dissembler Cousin Bette and the dense nineteenth-century Parisian milieu in which she plots a terrible revenge on her patronizing relatives. Introduction by Michael Tilby; Translation by James Waring. READ an excerpt here: http://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/…/cousin-bette-by-honore…/#

By Honore De Balzac
Translated by James Waring
Of course, everybody was quite satisfied and easy. The young people and
the Baroness lauded the model father to the skies, forgetting the death
of the two uncles. Life cannot go on without much forgetting!

Yes, I looked at the doctor--see, like this,” and he turned
to show three-quarters face, like his portrait, and extended his hand
authoritatively--“and I said:

             “The slave was here,
He showed his order, but he nothing gained.

“_His order_ is a pretty jest, showing that even in death Monsieur le
President de Montesquieu preserved his elegant wit, for they had sent
him a Jesuit. I admire that passage--I cannot say of his life, but
of his death--the passage--another joke!--The passage from life to
death--the Passage Montesquieu!”
